Compared to similarly priced PC's, $799 for a yonah duo 1.8 is pretty weak.
To be honest, I'd rather see the cheaper model drop in price (if not both) than a speed bump.
Since we don't know the prices yet, my suggestion is that we don't touch the "jump to conclusions mat" just yet.
My take on this is that it's a great update! The performance of the base-model is more than doubled when you really think about it! Bring on the updates!

Obviously Sandy Bridge. I don't think we'll see the K series processors, though. Apple likes to keep a tight lid on thermals.
A small blade SSD built-in would be nice, but we didn't see them in the MBP update, so perhaps they're supply constrained? I have no doubt we'll see them across all Macs eventually though.
As to the GPU, we've been asking for desktop parts for god knows how long to drive that massive screen, but Apple obviously have different priorities. A high-end mobile AMD part is the most likely bet, even though a desktop GPU would be totally awesome.
Other than that, Thunderbolt begins to seep into the rest of the Mac lineup. I'm still intrigued as to how much industry support it'll eventually get as a native IO, but even with ethernet/firewire/usb adapters it's still a nice bit of tech.

In this class of RAM the 2GB sticks are now less than two 1GB sticks. So I don't see why buying only 1GB sticks would be advisable any more.
It would definitely be best to use 2GB modules. They're cheaper per GB. No you understood right, however this may not be the case now... After doing some more digging, this is in no way a limitation of the FB-DIMM design or a requirement. But rather initial modules in smaller capacities (256 and 512 MB) were only using one of the onboard channels to increase the latency. All I can find is various discussions and references to this happening regarding various Samsung and Kingston modules... Doesn't appear that any of this is linked to modules approved by Apple or that meet Apple's specs for the Mac Pro. So I may have been off-base. I'll see what else I can dig up...

Ripping one DVD here or there makes sense to just drop in the disc and go for it. But if you have several to do, it can be a lot faster to create images of the discs and then rip them, especially if you image with a couple systems and then have a couple others doing the ripping / re-encoding, especially if you're trying to keep the quality very high.

I think a 17" model would be a good idea for Apple. It'll stop people buying Minis from getting their LCD fix from elsewhere to some extent and won't cost Apple a bean in R&D costs since they already use 17" panels in the iMac and have all the internals ready because of the 20" and 23" ACDs. It would only need a different sized chassis to be designed.

Honestly, it was more or less just how it's worked out. I moved and have no microwave any longer. I could buy one but I'm looking to see how long I can hold out. So far I did miss it when I needed to reheat turkey dinner, but 20 minutes tops to preheat and heat up leftovers in a pan didn't actually feel like I wasted any time. Plus, things seem to heat up more evenly.
When my family came they were shocked to see I had no microwave. They were a bit confused but had to figure out what to do just like I have. We'll see how quickly I fold. So far it's been 2 months.
I have a true steamer for veggies, a stove for everything else, and now a popcorn popper for those movie nights. I have a glass stovetop so making a pot of popcorn is not only bad for my stove, but not easy.

Yahoo article reports: According to Gartner, Apple shipped 766,000 PCs in the second quarter of the year, good enough for 4.6% of the U.S. market, and a 15.4% increase over a year ago. Apple's growth rate exceeded those of the No. 1 and No. 2 PC companies, Dell Inc.:)
Just to give some more figures - Gartner says worldwide PC sales are 55 million compared to 49.5 million this time last year, and 16.6 million in the US compared to 15.6 million last year.
But I wonder where they got 766,000 from. The sales figures separate out retail from regional sales, but considering that most Apple stores are in the US, the vast majority of the 216,000 retail sales would be in the US, so US sales could be anything between 642,000-858,000. That's 3.9%-5.2% US market share. Looks like they picked a percentage right in the middle, but I would say it's nearer to 5%. Of course, worldwide it's still only 2.4%.
To put this in perspective, Dell sold 9.73 million PC worldwide and 5.3 million in the US, ie. 7x Apple's shipments.

VERY disappointed in Apple, but hardly surprised.
Not saying its a "Good" app, as it is clearly ridiculous and ignorant, but hey, so is "Angry Birds" and half the other apps on the store. This one is simply politically incorrect, and Appl once again proved that they are at the beck and call of the PC special interest hootin n hollerin, just like porn-app-gate.

the Daewoo -> Chevrolet re-branding in europe has been more or less the best business move GM has made perhaps in the last decade
with every "had been Daewoo" model getting replaced over the years sales picked up ... even more so in eastern europe
sure their styling isn't bold o nthe interieur and on the front of the cars very US taste like but i suspect the korean Chevrolet brand is the safest in their whole portfolio

Many Americans speak proudly about "buying American" when they own a Chevy, but most cars these days are international efforts. The diesel Cruze is a Korean design with a little Opel input and an Italian engine, assembled in the US (in the case of US-market Cruzes).

I am not sure if you know, but there are differences between trademark law and patent law. In this case, the one you cited (which I studied), Amazon was protecting its system or process by which they achieved a 1-click process. This is a clear cut patent infringement.
However, the current article deals with a trademark issue, which is different from patent law. In this instance, we are dealing with generic terms (App Store) and Apple cannot trademark that. As another member said, Apple does not have a trademark in App Store ;)

Developers are usually very unwilling to ship code that they haven't been able to try out, so expect a version using eight cores about two days after the developers have access to an eight core machine.

I think it's important for OS X to support Blue Ray as soon as possible, and to me it would seem crazy to not at least offer it as a BTO option when the Mac Pro is launched. Maybe if it's going to be in the PS3 then then high volume purchases will make it cheap enough to put into at least the high end Mac Pros as standard. Looking at the current prices of �800 then obviously that's too expensive to put in as standard.
It seems everything gets integrated these days, for example DVD+RW and DVD-RW both still exist (even though + is more popular and cheaper) so I would assume that sooner or later there will be writers than can work with both HD-DVD and Blue Ray.
Although I really would benefit from Blue Ray discs NOW, I couldn't afford it at current prices. However, I would be very disappointed in Apple as a company if they didn't have it as an option. The top of the range model should be the flagship of the very best and latest technology. Some people will have the money and will be very let down if Apple doesn't deliver.
